laptop hard drive not recognized by bios

I bought a new toshiba hdd for my gateway 5300 solo and my hard drive
was at one time recognized by the bios, but when i tried to install
os; it kept saying  os not found. I then put it on a desktop and i
managed to install win xp but when i put it back on the laptop, the
hard drive was not being recognized in bios.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Mad at Acer

Please bear with me while I unload my anger on all you nice people.  :)  I
bought a new Acer Travelmate 8104 a month ago.  I was impressed with the
specs and thought it was a good value.  And it is, overall, a very nice
computer.  I use it for work and for play, which mainly means MMORGing for
me.  (City of Heroes, if you must know.)

Unfortunately, ATI does not support the ATI Mobility X700 graphics chip for
Acer computers.  (They do support for a variety of OTHER laptops, however.)
It could be the fact that the Acer has a non-standard screen (1600×1050).
So when my video game tells me that my drivers are out of date, and directs
me to the ATI website, the ATI website then directs me to the Acer website
because they don’t support Acer.  Acer, however, does not have the updated
driver!

Moral of the story:  If you want to play video games on your laptop, check
with the graphics chip provider FIRST, to make sure they support it.  AND
DON’T BUY AN ACER!

Thanks for letting me vent.  I welcome any suggestions or condolences anyone
has….

Toshiba Satellite A45 Memory Upgrade

A Toshiba  Satellite A45-S121 has 512MB of memory preinstalled when it was
purchased, and I hope it has a free slot available for the upgrade.

This A45 model has 2 memory slots under the keyboard, which must be removed
to make changes.

I want to upgrade to 1GB of memory and I need to know if I have to buy a
512MB, or a 1GB module.

Therefore, how do I determine if it currently has one slot with a single
512MB module, or two slots with two 256MB modules installed?

Thank You!

Gary

Help: poured water over laptop

I poured a big glass of water over my laptop keyboard (by mistake).

I turned it on after 2 hours. It worked for a couple of seconds then
stopped and is totally broken (won’t switch on at all, power light on
the adapter goes out when I plug it into the laptop).

Is it likely to be the motherboard that short-circuited? I can buy
another motherboard, but it would be a waste of money if it was
something else like the processor.

Toshiba recycle program (TERRE) …

For those that are into recycling:

http://www.toshiba.ca/web/link?id=2200 (this is the Canadian version, but
I’m sure they offer this in other countries).

They pick the machine up and give you a free 128 MB USB Flash Drive.

Thanks,

AC Power Loss => Laptops for kiosks

Hi All,
We have a company operating kiosks. Currently we are running the kiosks
of normal PC hardware.
We want to replace all PC’s with laptop, due to new size constrictions.

However one requirement which can be found in normal motherboad BIOS Is
"AC Power Loss Restart". Which starts the PC up after a power loss.
Granted: The laptop does have a battery, but if there happens to be a
power loss for more then one day, we would still need to turn on the
laptop.

Are laptops available that have this BIOS setting ? I have inspected
several but no luck so far.

If this setting is not available in the BIOS, is there an option we can
write to ACPI, to enable this feature.

Alternatively we would have to go with an embedded system. Any
recommendations are welcome on that front as well.

Many thanks
Piet De Jong

Looking for a laptop HDD – which make?

Hi,

I am looking to get a new HDD for a Dell laptop, not sure whick make is the
most reliable – what would you recommend from your experience?

Also found Hitachi’s are priced almost the double of others for same
capacity, RPM, etc – any decent explanation on why?  Are these really that
reliable to be worth the price?

Regards
a.
