I’ve got a Samsung X20 laptop which I am considering giving a memory
upgrade. The user guide states only the following with regard to the type
of memory required:

> Memory: 256/512/1024 MB DDR2 SDRAM, 2 DDR socket

I did some Internet window-shopping and note that this memory is available
at different clock speeds — 512 MB @ 333 MHz or 512 MB @ 266 MHz, for
example.

Does it matter what the clock speed of the memory chips are? Can I mix and
match, or do both the installed chips have to be running at the same clock
speed?

Regards,
Tristan

Greetings.

I’ve got a laptop computer which I’m trying to secure against theft. I’ve
already got insurance and a security cable, but as a last resort I’d like
to set it up to "phone home" by trying to send me an e-mail whenever it’s
activated.

The system is dual-boot Windows XP and GNU/Linux. I use the latter almost
exclusively, and writing my own "phone home" program is a trivial one-line
shell script (see below). However, I expect most thieves will opt to boot
into Windows XP. Is there any comparable batch file or free software I
can use to have it send an e-mail upon Windows bootup? I’d rather not
install something big and complicated like Cygwin or a C compiler just to
port my one-line shell script. Is there some MS-Windows equivalent of the
following I can add to my Startup folder or AUTOEXEC.BAT file?

#!/bin/sh
echo "Hello world" | mail -s "Phoning home" m…@example.com

Regards,
Tristan

In general, laptops can run with no battery installed from their AC
adapter. Try "wiggling" the connector from the the AC adapter in the
jack (slowly, as the light might take a few seconds to come on). It
sounds like a bad power jack, since it did work once.

Yes, it sounds like the battery is dead. But the laptop power light
should still turn on.

It would be better to identify the laptop model.

Although it’s possible to get good laptop buys on E-Bay, you can also
get taken (badly taken … quite a few laptops on E-Bay go for several
times to as much as ten times what they are worth even if working
perfectly).

key…@gmail.com wrote:
> Hi…
> I have a laptop that i just bought second hand of e-bay. When i plug in
> my power cord it does not show chargin. it showed that for about 30
> minutes the first time i used the laptop and after than i have never
> been able to run the thing on AC

> now my question is follows:
> 1) Can laptops run directly on AC or do i need the battery in there
> always?

> 2) If the Li-ion battery shows one flashin green LED at the back after
> pressing the button (out of 4) does it mean the battery is dead

> 3) If the battery is completely dead (not capable of being charged
> anymore) is the power light/charging of the laptop(symbol: =D) supposed
> to turn on?

> Thanks everyone in advance

> Any troubleshooting tips would be sincerely and greatly appreciated…

I am still hunting for a thin and light notebook (less than 3.5 pounds
and less than 2" thick) and I am wondering whether I should hold buying
it.
1. Is there any chance that people would be able to make a notebook
with a large screen size of 15.4" but weigh less than 3.5 pounds? As
far as I know, the closest for that requirement is Panasonic Y4 with
14.1" screen and weigh 3.37 pounds.
2. Does thin and light notebook always require an Ultra Low Voltage or
a Low Voltage CPU? The fastest Low Voltage CPU right now is Intel
Pentium M Processor 778 which runs at 1.6 GHz. I wish they can make a
faster one.
3. Is there any chance that Intel would be able to make 2.1 GHz CPU
this year with very low power requirement and therefore enable PC
manufacturer to put it in a thin and light notebook? The fastest thin
and light notebook that I know of is again the Panasonic Y4 runs at 1.6
GHz. If only they can make it at 2.1 GHz.
