   It’s not absolute, but from your description, my money is on the inverter.

   That was my thinking, as well.  I figured if the tube was out, it would
   just be out.  The fact that it can be "jump started" would lead me to
   think it’s the inverter.

   Can’t the tube become, so to speak, "marginal"? Not sure about the tubes in
   backlights, but the ones at the ceiling sometimes do become marginal and
   work a bit.
