Centrino I vs Centrino II

Hi,

Do you think there is a big performance difference between:
1. Centrino I (Dothan FSB 400)
2. Centrino II (Sonoma FSB 533)
(for equivalent CPU frequency) ??

I actually have the choice between M735 1,7Ghz FSB 400 and M740 1,73
Ghz FSB 533. The old one has a non glossy display and has my
preference for this reason but I don’t want to have a too big
performance penalty.

Thank’s for your answers.

problem with display: toshiba satellite 1800-400 – HELP

Hello,

I’ve got a Toshiba Satellite 1800-400 laptop with following specs:
proc: Intel Celeron 800 MHz
HDD: 15 Gb
RAM: 256 Mb
op. sys: Win XP Pro SP2

Problem:
monitor is switching off so often that I can’t use it any more. At the
beginning (=3-4 days ago) it was going down after 1-2 hours of normal
work, now it does it right after switching the comp on. It’s not
completely turned off – where is a little button that turns the monitor
off then you close it and when I press it – monitor blinks and displays
properly (but only for this blink…). External monitor works fine when
I plug it in.

What I’ve tried:
– I switched off (and tried different settings of) power settings, in
BIOS and in Windows
– I removed Win Pro and installed Win 98 instead
– I didn’t manage to update the BIOS because my floppy drive doesn’t
work ;-/
– I removed all programs and updates from last period

I’ve no idea what it can be and I didn’t find any hint in google search.
I hope any of you can help me with it!!

thanks a lot!!!

HP ZX5000 AC Power Issues

A story continued from the "AC Adapter Lifespan?" thread (basically
that was, "is an AC Adapter a consumable?")…

As it turns out, the AC Adapter is not the cause of my HP ZX5000
Pavilion spontaneously switching from AC power to battery (the
replacement exhibits the same behaviour).  Other possible causes of the
switchover that I have ruled out are the battery itself (laptop
spontaneously turned off when the battery was removed) or a bad
connection at the power jack (laptop switches to battery while laptop
is sitting on desk — does not switch back to AC except by removing and
replugging the jack — jiggling wire or plug causes no switchover in
either direction).

It has been suggested by HP technical support that it could be a
problem with any one of the numerous APCI drivers installed for
handling power management.  I find this somewhat hard to believe, but
if somebody tells me I’m wrong, I’ll go down that road.  The suggestion
was to remove all APCI drivers, reboot, and let Windows XP Pro
reinstall all of them.  I’m just not seeing the proper risk/reward to
try that without a second opinion.

I am now assuming something on the motherboard, or attached to it, is
giving up the ghost which I’m actually OK with since I have the
extended warranty, but before I let anyone tear my laptop completely
apart for no good reason, the questions:

1) Should I really give the APCI driver reinstallation a shot?

2) Am I missing anything else?

3) If a teardown is required, is there any reason to send the hard
drive with the laptop for HP to repair this?  While I do have the hard
drive backed up, I’d really rather not give them the opportunity to
"cleanse" my harddrive if there is no need for it…

4) For my furthering education, does anyone know the exact mechanism(s)
laptops use to detect the presence of AC power?  I assume it’s simply a
conversion of the 18VDC to a digital input pin monitored by the
operating system.  I’m also guessing there must be some hysteresis
built in since it never spontaneously switches back to AC.  Pointers to
documentation gladly accepted in lieu of long explanations here…

Thanks,
Steve

Buy a laptop without internal optical drive?

Have been looking at the Lenovo Thinkpad ultra
portable….. model X41

It does NOT have optical drive built in since its only
12’1" screen. Instead you buy the docking station which
has optical drive there.

Would you buy a laptop of any size without built in
optical drive?

Laptop Output on TV

Hi Group,
I have an HP Pavilion dv4000 series laptop, it has a port that i we can
use to use TV for output, i bought the S Jack Cable that has 2
connectors that go in TV in white and red color.
I connected the laptop to TV. But i could not get any output on TV. Is
there some configuration i have to do in laptop or there is nothing
more we have to do than connecting laptop with TV using that wire? My
TV is fine and tuned correct.

Presario 12XL410 hangs on Logo screen

I’ve been working on a friends Compaq Presario 12XL410 laptop. I have
finally gotten it to turn on, but it freezes up when it gets to the
Compaq logo screen, with the cursor in the upper right hand corner of
the screen. I have also tried starting up into the Bios. I hold the F10
key down when I turn it on and it shows the boot process. When it gets
down to showing the drives, It will reconize the harddrive and then the
DVD drive and then just hangs. Pushing the Ctrl, Alt and Delete won’t
reboot. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks in advance

Water on laptop =(

Thursday I spilled a little bit of water – 1/8 of a poland spring
small bottle – on the upper left hand side of my Dell Inspiron 5150
laptop. I did try to turn it on after turning it off, but then let it
sit for 3 days.

It seems to boot fine, it beeps a couple of times but I believe that
is because I killed the battery – however my keyboard is shot so I
can not type in my password. Should I take it as a good sign it loads
up to the password Windows XP screen?

I ran a diagnostics, and it also said the IDE Media drive was blank.
Does anyone know what that means/how much it would cost to fix? Also
that it had no communication from the battery, but I assumed as
much.

Unfortunately I am off warranty (though Dell would not cover this) but
I have purchased a new keyboard. Of course the screws are stripped
from a friend trying – unasked! – to remove the keyboard, but I
believe a computer repair shop should be able to fix that.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I be okay with the actual
laptop? Thanks so much !

Alcam Designer 400 CPU upgrade? help requested

I have an old Alcam 400 laptop I bought back in 1998. It has a
4GB HDD, 800×600 screen, an AMD K6-2/300, and uses the TX
chipset. I have 192MB in it, and when booting Linux I use
"mem=64M" to load Linux only in the first 64M, using the
upper 128M for swap and tmpfs.

It it possible to swap out the CPU in this laptop? The K6/300
is incredibly slow. I have a K6-3+/450 w/ 256K cache I’d love
to drop in this laptop, has anyone done this? Are there jumper
settings (voltage) for the OEM motherboard used in this laptop?
The K6-III+ would cache all the memory, allowing me to boot Linux
normally. Second choice would be to use a Pentium MMX 233 CPU,
which as I recall "felt" faster than the low-end K6-2s.

HP Pavillion TV tuner question

Hi! Someone here mention that US TV tuner is not going to work in another
country. I am planning to get Pavillion dv8000 with TV tuner. As I will be
moving to Korea, my question is? Eventhough Korea have same system (NTSC,
all TV, VCR, DVD playing with no problem), is the TV analog USB tuner be
useless there? HP gave me two different answer, yes you guess they were
yes and no.
Thank for any advice
