Can't use restore disk

The hard drive on my Toshiba 5205 was fried, and the machine does not
recognize the CD drive, so the restore disk won’t work.  For some
reason, the BIOS shows only the date and time, which may be an added
complication.  I’d appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

thanks very much

ThinkPad X41

I recently purchased a ThinkPad X41. Loaded it up with 1.5MB of Ram.

Question: If using in conjunction with it’s docking station, is there any
reason why it could not be used as a desktop replacement for all day usage
for normal business stuff like email, ms office applications, etc.? My
concern is overheating issues if leaving on all day at the office.

Thanks for any advice or real world usage experience.

Best Linux for old laptop to run "apm -s"?

Do somebody have good experiences to run Linux in an older laptop which don’t support
acpi but only apm to suspend (apm -s command)?

My old Toshiba Portege 7140CT (1999) worked succesfully with Fedora Core 3, but now
with FC4 it manages resume from suspend only once in about 10 times.
I don’t know why? I have tried all possible what I can.
I have reported it to Fedora Bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=170431
and they made some changes to latest FC4 update 2.6.14-1.1637_FC4
but it didn’t solve the problem.

So, I think to change the Fedora to another distro, if you give me some clue
which one is the best linux for my laptop…

Dell Inspiron 1100 startup/crash problem

My Inspiron will start up normally when cold.  If I’m running a long
program or defragging for example, it will slow to a complete stop
after about 45 minutes…..as if it is sensitive to the heat.  If I
try to re-boot immediately, i get an error message (often saying "cant
find operating system", or it simply takes forever to get any message.
Sometimes it just hangs up.

All is well again after a complete cool down in 3 to 4 hours and the
cycle repeats.

Could it be my hard drive???? any ideas anyone???

Thanks to all who have any ideas.

recovery cd

Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 1405, 3 years old, with a 3 cd set of
Recovery and App/Driver CDs. I recently tried to use these to reset to
factory settings. The installation went all the way through, took 3
hours, but now I can’t boot. After the word "Toshiba" appears on the
screen, it goes blank and all I have is a blinking curser. What can I
do to complete the recovery? The system is now unusable. Thanks.

DC power jack repair on a Compaq Presario 2100

Hello,

The DC power jack on my Presario 2145US has gone bad.  I took the laptop
apart but the jack and the solder connections are too small for my
capabilities.  Does anybody here know of good repairs shops to ship to?
Any comments on local shops in the Denver Colorado are welcome as well.

USB Port questions…

Hi, through Windows XP’s device manager, I see I have four ‘USB Root
Hub’ devices.  These correspond to the four usb ports on my laptop, 3
on the right of the machine and one on the left.
When I right click on the devices, and choose ‘Properties’, I can click
‘Power’ and for each of the  right USB hub devices I’m told there are
’2 ports available’., for the left side one i’m told there are ’6 ports
available’

After fiddling though, it seems that two of the actual external usb
sockets on the right of my laptop seem to correspond to one of the usb
hubs – if i put my mouse in one socket, and my bluetooth dongle in the
one next to it, they both show up on the same ‘usb root hub’ devices’
Power page, and there are no more ‘ports’ available on this one.

The third external usb socket is there on its own, but also supports
two ports – would I need a hub to access these, or Is there some kind
of splitting device to turn one socket into two that might be cheaper?

Again with the left-hand external usb socket – this appears to support
6 devices (at up to 500ma per device), would I really need a hub for
this or can I again just get a splitter of some kind?

Finally, there is a fourth ‘usb root hub’ device listed, but there is
no physical usb port that corresponds to this; is this just due to the
generic way some laptops are made and it simply hasn’t been connected?

Hope that made sense!

Mark.

repair A drive?

My A drive (floppy) doesn’t work: can it be repaired, do I have to replace
it? (Compaq Presario 1200)
Regardless of what floppy I put in it, I get a message about the disk not
being formatted, and format it now. It doesn’t matter what I do: I can never
get any other message or read a disk.
I tried using a cleaner disk a couple of times; it didn’t change anything.
Are there instructions on line about how to remove/replace a floppy drive in
a laptop. (There’s no warranty left to void-the laptop’s 5 years old.)

hp ze 4800 external button problems

i have two minor problems that arent a main priority for me now but my
mute button and my wireless network buttons stopped working on me.  i
can still connect through my wireless connection by going through
network connections on desktop, and pretty much the same with my mute
button.  i have used the recovery disk for my computer just recently
and the buttons were not working before that, so i thought they might
work after i recover everything.  that didnt work.  it wouldnt be a
prob but my hp warranty will go up in a few months, and i was just
wondering if i could fix it myself or just go ahead and send it off
and get it fixed? thnx

Can't Fit PCMCIA USB2.0 AND Wireless Cards at same time?

Hi,

In a nutshell – is there a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card that can go in the bottom
slot?

In more detail, i’ve got a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop with two PCMCIA slots.

I’m about to install wireless networking, including a Netgear PCMCIA
Wireless card which needs to go in the top slot.

The problem is, I’d also hoped to install a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card as well –
but all of the ones I’ve seen look like they need to go in the top slot
also.

Hence my question – is there a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card that can go in the bottom
slot?

I know I could just install the USB2.0 card and use a Netgear wireless usb
dongle, but I think that will stick out way too far – I’d much rather have
the configuration above.

Any help much appreciated

Many Thanks

iceman
