Acer Travelmate 4500

I bought a new Acer 4500 Travelmate in Nov 2004 to use in Spain to connect
to the Internet.

The machine has Intel Centrino and uses XP pro and Outlook Express 6

When the machine to type e-mail or word documents I noticed that
occasionally the curser would ‘jump’ from where you were typing to somewhere
else on the page amongst words already typed and similar in the case of an
e-mail in Outlook.

Sometimes jumped to the address or subject line.

During our 7 months in Spain I spoke to two other Acer owners who claimed
their machines did similar.

What I would like to know from this newsgroup is, are there any Acer owners
here who’s machine does what I have described, do you know of how to fix
this problem is or was it a hardware or software problem?

Thank you.

Recover Fujitsu NB

I need to recover an old Fujitsu Lifebook S4562 NB and successfully
recovered the OS but there are a driver disk and a bay manager disk that
seem to be installed manually.  As there is no documentation on disks and
its website, can someone advise me where I can locate some advice how to
install them properly.

Thanks,

How do I clean an LCD screen?

I have an Acer Extensa 2000 notebook.   I bought it just before last
Christmas and have enjoyed using it ever since.   Recently I have noticed
that the LCD screen is starting to get dusty and I would like to clean it.
Can someone point me in the right direction as to what cleaning agent, if
any, to use.

Many thanks in advance for any contributions.

Asus W1000 2 video questions

Q1: I have owned my laptop for several months now, delighted with it
except for one issue: the bundled ‘Mobile Theatre’ software is not the
best.   I use alternatives for DVD and MP3 playback and viewing images
but TV reception is a problem.   To set up the RGB/NSTC etc options you
have to select a country and Australia is not on the list.   If I select
"UK" I can receive all local analogue channels but with no audio
(different version of PAL), if I select Austria (which should be the
right PAL setup, I believe) I can get audio & vision but only on one of
the local channels, none of the others will tune in with the auto-tune
feature.    I cannot receive digital transmissions under any
circumstances.   Can anyone suggest any alternative software that I could
use to give me better access to the on-board tuner features?

Q2: I would like to set up the PC for surveilance monitoring and I am
looking for software that will detect changes in the received video (ie
some kind of motion detection) and only start recording when motion is
detected – any suggestions please?

TIA
Malcolm

1MB or 2MB cache?-Laptop buying advice

Hello,

I am looking for some advice. I had the Thinkpad T22 for a couple of
years, and I want to buy a new laptop. I am mainly comparing between
two models:

1- Thinkpad R50e
            ( Intel Pentium M-705 1.5 GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 400MHz bus,
256 RAM, 40GB, DVD/CDRW, wirless lan, up to 64 MB graphics memory, and
2USB)

2- HP Compaq nx6110
           ( Intel Pentium M-730 1.6 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 533 MHz bus,
256 RAM, 40GB, DVD/CDRW, wireless lan, up to 128 MB graphics memory,
2USB, and bluetooth)

Both come with 1 year warranty. I intend to add 512 MB to push the RAM
to 784 MB.

Now, I am mainly concerned about the 1MB cache in the IBM vs the 2MB in
the HP. Is this going to make a noticeable difference performance-wise?
My work is mainly code development for mathematical calculations, as
well as heavy disk I/O(for which i will connect to a 150 GB USB drive).
Not so much graphics.

Advice is most appreciated.

Thanks,
Ahmed

Sony VAIO PCG-GRX610 – restore CD

Hi All,
I just got a Sony Vaio PCG-GRZ610 from a friend, and I’d like to
rebuild it from scratch.  I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the
original restore cd and any other cd’s that originally came with it
(friend has no idea what he did with them).  Or alternatively point me
in the direction where I might be able to get them.  Went to the Sony
Vaio website and it tells me the PCG-GRZ610 doesn’t exist!!!!!

Any help much appreciated.

regards
paul

Please help new to laptops… Help

Hi all,

Just bought an Evesham A410 Voyager which comes with the AMD Turion MT34 cpu
and the ATI mobile X700 graphics card.  I would like to play the occasional
game of Counter Strike Source when I’m working away but have found it jumpy
when I’ve played.  I’ve checked all settings etc and the system hould be up
to a game – I’m guessing its the 512mb of ram.  I’m new to laptops etc and
need some advice on ram – Do they use pc3200 ddr (SODimm)?  Is my notebook
capable of running dual channel?  what ram do I buy?

Thanks in advance.

I’m thinking of getting one of these. I would appreciate any comments
from owners concerning these models with respect to reliability,
performance, battery life, etc.

A design oversight on the HP Compaq nx6110?

As I also inquired on http://www.meulie.net/forum_viewtopic.php?92.2718
I am wondering about a thing: The nx6110 seems to have a fan intake on
the bottom. When the laptop is standing on flat surface there is a
slight opening between the surface & the laptop, enabling air to reach
the fan.
However, when one has the laptop on his/her lap, the left leg of the
person completely blocks off this fan!! Is this an oversight in the
design of this laptop, or is there no harm in this fan being blocked
off?

Vaio Sound @ startup

When my notebook first loads up, before the Windows screen, there is a
Vaio screen that plays a sound. How do I disable this sound? I can’t
start my PC in a meeting or other quiet enviornment because of this
sound.

Thanks,
