IBM HDD siren & Error 174

People,
My IBM 560Z has no external connections (floppy on the fritz, USB
doesn’t work at all), so I used an IDE/2.5" adapter and hitched it up
to my PC. Worked fine – I managed to copy over the files I wanted.
Put it back in the laptop and it sirened at me – like a police siren,
6 sets of 3. Then the laptop threw up an error 174, which is a config
error.
I can see no mention of the siren anywhere on the web or Usenet.
Anyone any ideas? New HDD?
Thanks,
DAH

Toshiba M30X WiFi problems

Hi.
My Toshiba restarts itself always when running on Wireles Lan. It happens
about every two hours. I had the notebook repaired (mainboard changed), but
it did not help. I am wondering, if this could be a general Toshiba
Satellite M hardware problem. Not many people use WiFi nowadays, that is why
they may not notice the problem. Do you have any idea what this could be?
Does anybody have such problems with new (i.e. centrino) Toshibas? I have
been thinking about returning this notebook and getting  new model instead.
I like Toshibas. But I would like to make shure, the problem will not happen
again.

WiFi problem

Just plugged a WiFi access point Asus WL 300g, working in 802.11b mode
(11Mb/s), and problems arise.

Even though I’ve upgraded the firmware of the Access Point, and my notebook
has the latest drivers, whenever the AP is placed over 3/4 meters from the
notebook, windows states the connection has dropped, then after about half a
minute it connects again….over and over.

The AP can connect up to 54Mb/s so running @ 11Mb/s it should keep the pace
comfortabkly.

Wondering if the built in adapter (NO PCMCIA) has some limits….

Toshiba Satellite M30 + Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (as
stated from the device manager), Windows XP Pro + SP2.

Any help appreciated.

ATI USB TV Tuner – Do not Upgrade Software

Just a warning to all those considering upgrading their ATI USB 2.0 TV
Tuner…Do not do it….I was ugrading software on my computer and saw that
there was a new version out for the tuner….Much to my surprise, after
installing the new software (actually the install did not fully work
properly) the tv did not work….tried uninstalling and reinstalling, tried
the older version, using system restore, nothing worked…After wasting way
too much time trying to resolve the issue, I resorted to a complete
reinstall of windows xp…..

After searching on the web, it was clear that many people have similar
problems once they upgrade the software…The old adage, "if it ain’t broke
don’t fix it" certainly rings true……

Newbie – laptop for Uni?

Hi,
Newbie here. Want to buy my first lap top prinarily for use at Uni, taking
notes from library material with Word, and also internet research and email.
Want to pay a reasonable, entry-level price; can’t afford any thing flash.
Home computer is not a Mac, so don’t want a mac laptop.  Any recommendations
for a good value, reasonable powerful, reliable machine,;what should I look
out for, what elements are essential, what are the traps for new players?  I
know very little about megs and rams and roms and rems and bytes and bits
and bobs …

Presario 1800T Laptop Video Question

Can an external laptop power supply go bad in a way that would mess up
the laptop video during booting?

My 1800T laptop recetnly started showing signs of a problem.
About 2 weeks ago, on boot, (with the external power supply), I would
get 3 beeps. But no sign of a problem.

Was the three beeps a warning (video)? THe screen would be black, but
on reboot, it started normally.

The next week, on boot (with power supply), after showing the Compaq
logo, and with Windows starting, the display would go fuzzy in a pixel
manner. Upon reboot, the display would also go white in a gradational
manner.

However, when I switch power supplies, the problem seems to go away.
It’s only during the boot that the video problem occurs, and if I
reboot a couple of times, it runs like a champ. But only if I’m on
battery or using my alternat power supply.

Is it possble that the power supply was causing the video issues, or am
I just trying to keep from admitting that my machine is starting the
long slow decline?

Thanks,
Eric

Sony Vaio Random Shutdowns

Hello all,

I am now officially frustrated with my Sony Vaio GRV-550 laptop (Win XP
Pro, P4, 512MB Ram, 8GB free disk space).    Everything was fine until
a few months ago, the computer started shutting down without any notice
or error messages.   A full system shutdown occurs (not just the
monitor).

The system usually crashes when I perform a full scan using either one
of the following:  Norton Antivirus, Adaware SE, Spybot, Panda Software
and HouseCall by TrendMicro.

* I tried running all the above programs in safe mode as well – the
computer still went down.

* There is no specific file that crashes the system when it is being
accessed.

* I keep my laptop raised with a free air-flow underneath it (as Sony’s
laptop really tend to heat up like crazy.

1) Is it possible that the computer’s hardware does not support XP Pro
(was originally shipped with Home edition)?
2) If system heating is the issue – how can I monitor the temperature
in real-time?
3) How can I verify that this is not an Adware/Virus issue?   Which one
of the programs out there should I use?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Dotan
