I have Compaq Presario 1236 it won’t charge battery after draining
battery 100%. It use to turn on but eventually it even stopped turning
on. Few times is would turn on only with message I need to charge
battery. I recently replaced the battery but no luck.

It is just DEAD won’t do anything even if power cord is plugged
directly to the power source.

Help is very much appreciated.

I wanted to upgrade the CPU in my laptop, which is a Toshiba 1415
(Celeron 1.8 GHz).  Essentially the same computer was sold by Toshiba as
a 2415 with a Pentium 4 instead of a Celeron, and they use the same
bios.  So I bought (E-Bay) the closest CPU I could find:

Celeron CPU SL6J4

Pentium 4 CPU SL6FH

These CPUs are almost identical.  Same stepping (C1), same CPUID
(0F27H), same geometry (.13 micron).  Basically, the only difference is
that one is a Celeron, one is a full Pentium 4.

Well, it doesn’t work.  When I install the P4 and turn the computer on,
all that happens is that it get a loud continuous tone from the speaker.
  No boot, no post, no nothing (but it does respond to the power off
button, if you hold it down).

Now there are two possibilities:

1.  I got a bad CPU

2.  Although they are similar, you can’t convert a 1415 to a 2415 simply
by changing the CPU.

Does anyone know any way to find out what the situation is?

By the way, chaning the CPU (which is socketed) in this model is very,
very easy.  It’s under the keyboard, and very little disassembly is
required.

I am also considering changing the "combo" drive (DVD player and CD
burner) to a DVD burner (Toshiba SD-R6472).  It looks like a
straight-out replacement, on paper (but so did the processor swap).

My wife’s company gave her a Dell Latitude laptop to telecommute. But
the screen and keyboard look so awkward that I’m afraid she’ll hurt her
eyes and wrists. How do you add an external keyboard and monitor? Can
you make the second monitor the primary monitor, or will certain
programs only appear on the laptop monitor?

I am planning to buy a thinkpad recently.

My idea model is T43 2687D7U, which has a 14.1" SXGA+ TFT Display. The
graphic card is 64MB ATI Mobility RADEON x300

Since most of the time, I am going to use Debian. I just want to make
sure that Linux (especially Debian) can be easily setup on top of it
and achieve the optimal resolution (1400 x 1050) before I place the
order.

I checked the http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ibm.html, to my surprise,
there is no one reporting an installation on T43.

Do you have any expereince with Linux on T43 with SXGA+?

I’m working on a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop which is running VERY slow.  It
was acquired 2nd hand and has had things re-installed more than once. It’s
currently has XP Home and the latest Dell BIOS flashed.  I notice that there
is a paucity of drivers and Dell support programs available for download at
the Dell website for this model.  For instance there is NO chipset nor Dell
mobo downloadable drivers (ACPI?) available for this model.  Also I can find
no place in BIOS setup for these settings.

The fan comes on full speed very briefly during power-on post and then never
runs again.  The system crawls as the Pentium is throttling to very slow
speeds.  Where is the fan speed control SW or settings for the Inspiron
7500.  How do I repair/fix this issue?
