Phantom DOS window

Hi All,

I was doing my e-mail yesterday afternoon when a DOS window flashed
on my window to quickly for it to read.

I ran NAV and it didn’t find anything. I also an Spybot & Ad-aware
which found nothing. I also run SpyBlaster with automatic update. I
haven’t noticed any problems with the laptop a HP Pavilion zd7010us
running WinXPhe. I just don’t like things running on my machine
without me knowing what is going on.

I looked at the Event Log, and didn’t find anything that I didn’t
recognize.

The only new program that has been loaded is Expression 3 from
Microsoft about a 3 weeks ago.

If you have any idea how I could troubleshoot this I would like to know.

Online manual/photos Replacing ThinkPad T42 Key

I am looking for online directions and photos that show how to replace
a single key on an IBM T42 Thinkpad (the plastic cap and the plastic
‘pantagraph’ underneath, not any electronic mechanism and not the
entire keyboard). Doing this seems to be self-explanatory, but the
parts are tiny and break easily so I want to check whether there is an
easy or standard technique before trying the obvious. I have the
necessary parts. I assume the procedure is the same for most ThinkPads
regardless of model. Thanks.

SOLO 2500 BIOS upgrade failed

I recently replaced the HDD in my SOLO 2500 notebook The old drive was
4 GB, I replaced with a Hitachi 20 GB. The original BIOS came up after
HDD install seeing only 8.4.GB. I downloaded the Gateway 7507697 BIOS
upgrade and ran according to instructions.
Everything goes well until the error message " Expanded Memory
Manager (EMM) detected"  comes up. I tried this update after HDD
format and before installing the O.S.
     Web site
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/SHARED/2900728su4.shtml
claims 30 GB use possible on this model.

Gateway tech support was not very useful, and wanted me to
try it from Safe mode (??) I installed the O.S and confirmed that the
system is really only recognizing 8.4 GB. Old  BIOS is still intact,
sytem is now running but without full HDD recognition.
I’ve tried several different downloads of the same BIOS in case one
download was faulty. Anyone been on this road?

Quietest Laptop?

Hi everyone

I have recently bought a Sony Vaio which has turned out to a be a big
mistake due to it being too noisy. I am therefore going to take it part
and instead purchase a laptop that is much quieter.

Does anyone know what are the quietest laptops one can at the moment?

Kind regards

Changing the laptop case to relocate the LCD

We are wondering how diffult it is to take out the LCD panel in a
laptop and move it to the back side of the laptop.
(Kind of like a tablet, but less $)
We are doing this in a museum like setting so we can play back video
all in a small box.
I guess we would like to know if it is possible to extend the cables
for about a 6 inches. If anybody that works alot with this stuff might
be able to let us know what they think, that would be a great help. We
do alot of computer and electronic work, but not so much with laptops.
I would be most greatful if any
one can share some ideas.

Thank you!
Dereck

Shutting Down vs Idling

My laptop (a Dell Inspiron 5100) goes into an idle state of some sort,
I think, when I close it.

It shuts down Windows and turns itself off if I hit the power switch.

But if I hit the power switch, and don’t want to wait for it to shut
down before I close it, so close it, it does not complete the shutdown
process, but instead goes into an idle state in the middle of the
shutdown process.

Then when I go to use it again, sometimes the battery is run down
(after all, it was on all night long).  Other times, it completes the
shutdown process, and then I have to turn it on again.  Other times, it
does NOT shut down, but doesn’t work right, so I end up having to
restart it to get it to work right.

The only way I’ve found to deal with this is to wait until it shuts
down and turns off before closing it.

Just thought someone else might have had a similar issue, and maybe
even have come up with a solution.

Matt
