T1000 FAX/Modems

->I just read an article in INFOWORLD (6/11, pg 27) which talks about FAX/Modems
->introduced at COMDEX.  This is just what I’ve been waiting for for my T1000SE,
->I think.  Does anyone have any experience/opinions about this combo?  Is there
->enough disk space on a T1000SE to effectively receive and send FAX?  The
->FAX/Modem from Touchbase is quite pricey ($599US),  what’s the likelyhood of a
->rapid price drop or discount via mailorder.

Well, I saw a GVC 2400 baud pocket modem/FAX at COMDEX for $147.  We were
kinda rushed and couldn’t really poke at it much but it looked good.  Main
drawback (for me) was that it couldn’t take final form print files as input.
(I have lots of complex Word Perf. documents to send)  They mumbled about
being at work on this.

Recommendations wanted for 386 laptop/portable

I’m helping a friend pick out a 386 (not SX) laptop/portable.  I would
appreciate any comments pro or con on particular machines — what machine,
its cost, its particular strengths/weaknesses, if you’d recommend it.

Please *mail* and I’ll summarize.

Re: Unix on a T5200?

At CMU we run Mach on the T5200.  It supports a full Berkeley 4.3BSD Tahoe
Release environment, X11R4 and the Motif window manager.  It is available
to Berkeley Unix licensees at no additional charge from CMU (contact
m…@cs.cmu.edu).  At USENIX Mt Xinu of Berkeley, CA. announced that they
would be doing a commercial release of this system.  Mt Xinu can be

T1000SE 1.2MB external FD

Does anyone know if a 1.2MB external 5.25" floppy drive can be used with
the Toshiba T1000SE?  The salespeople seem to think you need a 286
processor, so they say no.  On the other hand, the machine already
has a 1.4MB 3.5" internal drive, so I’d expect the higher density
external drive to work as well.  So, has anyone tried it?  Are there
any particular drives to recommend or avoid?

Thanks,

Need pinout for GridCase1 LCD display

I am planning to use a GridCase1 LCD display as part of a project but I have
no information on how to connect it.

Grid Systems has been of little help: I asked for info on the display pinout
and got a technical manual with nothing about the display connections though
I was told that the info was in the manual. After a few fruitless calls to
them, I’ve given up on them. No one else I know has been able to help, so
I’m turning to the net.

Thanks in advance!

Wanted: Hacks for the Toshiba T1000 or T1000SE

Has anybody either:

  -=- Upgraded your RAM to 2MB in a T1000SE
(there are leads on the internal board for 1 more MB)

-=- Burned your own software onto EPROMs
(seems simple enough to do, those are 600K ROMs and it
may even take a bigger EPROM.  Your favorite applications
         without burning battery!)

-=- Got an external EGA monitor hooked up to your T1000SE

I am seriously considering burning my own EPROMs to put my favorite
shareware UNIXish utilities, Emacs, Laplink, PCKwik, etc…

I will post a summary to the net.  Thanks!

Compaq LTE 286

Multimate Advantage II on a Compaq LTE 286 portable locks up when
keystrokes arrive too rapidly.  Usually this is from too many page
downs, but any keystrokes seem to suffice.  The only option is to
reboot the machine, losing any unsaved data.  Both version 1.0 and 2.0
appear to have this problem.

Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there a fix?

Thanks.
